You don’t sound random in English. It might feel like you’re only getting the words out, but if you examine your word choices, there’s a pattern.
The way you disagree, the way you give feedback, and the way you turn something down all has a pattern. Let’s look at a simple example.
Someone invites you out, and you can’t go. What do you say?
A) “I can’t make it. Thanks though.”
B) “Thanks for inviting me. I can’t make it, but I hope you have a great time.”
C) “I’d love to, but I’ve got family in town this weekend.”
A, B, and C are all correct: each choice is relevant to the situation, but they give a completely different signal to the listener. A is direct. B softens. C builds connection. None of that is grammar related. It’s about how you position yourself in the conversation: direct, careful, or relational. They’re all correct by choice.
And these choices stack up fast! This is the part of English most people never get trained on: sounding like yourself. In a meeting, that might mean the difference between sounding decisive or hesitant. In an email, it can shift how your tone is read completely. Even though A, B, and C all have the same idea, they’ll result in completely different conversation outcomes.
Most people don’t realize they’re making these choices. They just feel like something is slightly off and can’t explain why.
